How to Easily Play Backyard Golf: Cornhole Chipping Games

It’s warming up, and that means spending time outdoors. One of our family’s favorite backyard activities is golf. We have a little putting green set up, and sometimes we make it more challenging by adding obstacles. But our new favorite game is cornhole chipping.

Cornhole golf – as the name indicates – combines golf and cornhole without trekking long distances to find your golf balls. Cornhole golf is a compact backyard game that you play outdoors but could be moved indoors if you have a decent-sized room.

For those who love playing golf but don’t have time to go to the course or maybe just want to play a fun game with family and friends in your backyard. Well, we have the perfect solution for you – backyard golf. This blog post will teach you how to play fun and easy cornhole chipping games, including Chippo. Here’s what I cover in this guide:

  • How to play golf cornhole?
  • How do you score in the game?
  • And a lot more.

How Do You Play Cornhole Golf?

If you are a golfer and love nothing more than hitting 18 holes (9 when you’re short of time), you will love cornhole golf. Cornhole golf is a game you can play in your backyard with just a few pieces of equipment.

Things you need

This two-team game requires the following equipment:

  • Two special boards with holes.
  • 12 foam balls
  • Two flags
  • Two chipping mats

Scoring

  • Simply hitting the board on the fly earns you 1 point – (Boardie)
  • The other holes on the board earn you anywhere between 3 and 7 points. Each golf cornhole has a different scoring system. You can also make up your own points. Generally, the smallest hole earns the highest points.
  • Some boards also have holes such as ‘water hazard’ or ‘sand’ – hitting these will score negative points.

How to Play

In the backyard golf cornhole game, you can have three types of gameplay. Divide the players into two teams. Each team can have two players. You can also play the game between two players – simply change the scoring accordingly. If you want to practice chipping, you can go solo – no one to stop you.

How Do You Score Cornhole Golf?

There are three ways to score in cornhole golf.

Match Play – 9 or 18 holes

  • Player one from team A takes three shots in a row and tallies his/her score
  • Next, a player from team B goes next and does the same.
  • The player with the highest tally ‘wins a hole’ for his or her team.
  • Once a player has won a hole, the other team gets to compete for hole no.2.
  • The winner is determined once a team has won more holes than there are left to play.
  • You can settle ties with the sudden death system – each team picks players to compete against each other.

Cornhole Style – Score to 18

This is the more straightforward scoring method and best suited for backyard game lovers or tailgate events.

  • A player from team A takes three shots in a row and tallies their score.
  • The opponent from team B goes next and tallies their score.
  • Points cancel out so only one team will score on each turn. For example, if the player from team A has scored 4 points and the one from team B scored 5 points, then Team B scores only 1 point in all.
  • Alternate until one team has attained a score of 18.

Two-Player Six Ball Game

If you have just two players, then this is the scoring to go for.

  • Each player stands next to his/her cornhole board. The boards are kept at a distance of at least 15 ft from each other.
  • Both players chip each of their 6 balls towards the opponent’s board and tally the scores.
  • You can choose from the above cornhole scoring or match play to score.

Is Chippo Cornhole Golf?

Playing Chippo cornhole golf in the backyard
Two people are playing golf in their backyard.

Now we come to Chippo – the game that has revolutionized the way people play yard games! Chippo also combines cornhole and golf, enabling avid golfers to play golf at any time of the day or night, indoors or outdoors.

Chippo is the brainchild of two passionate golfers – Brendan and Matt. Brendan thought of the game one night in 2017 and took his idea to his bro-in-law Matt, who (thankfully) listened to him. Hundreds of golfers, including PGA members, are glad he did!

Today Chippo is hailed as the greatest backyard game of all time.

It has won several awards – a noteworthy one being the Best Product of the Year at the PGA Merchandise Show 2018.

Each Chippo board is made of sturdy plastic and covered with artificial turf that resembles golfing greens. The portable game comes with foldable steel legs that help you transport and store the board quickly.

Chippo balls are manufactured by almost Golf – a top practice ball manufacturer in the market. The holes come with a net to catch the balls. Each board also comes with small compartments underneath them to keep your mats.

Features

  • Board dimensions are 40″ x 24″ with small holes of 6″ and a large hole of 9″
  • Lightweight – less than 30 lb.

Pros

  • Sturdy and durable
  • Great for gifting to the avid golfer in your circles
  • Challenging yet fun for all ages
  • Excellent customer service

Cons

Expert tips

  • Order extra balls.

How to Play Chippo – Is Chippo Scored the Same?

Chippo is scored slightly different than the cornhole game scoring described above.

Gameplay setup

  • Divide the players into two teams of two people each.
  • Place the two boards 15 feet apart.
  • Buy your own clubs or use wedges (I recommend sand wedge or lob wedges).
  • Flip a coin to decide who goes first.

Scoring

  • Hit the board on the fly – 1 point (Boardie)
  • Send your ball in the larger center hole for 3 points
  • Send the ball in either of the top corner holes for 5 points.
  • You get twice the points of each hole (thus 2, 6, or 10 points) if you bounce the ball in the respective holes.

FAQs

Is Chippo worth the high price?

Chippo is expensive because it is well made. They use significantly superior boards, balls, and mats than the competition. Also, they are patented and have won awards. If you are hesitant about paying this high price, you can opt to make your own Chippo game.

How far apart are Chippo boards?

The recommended distance between Chippo boards is 15 or 20 feet apart, measured from the front edge to the front edge.

Can you play Chippo with real golf balls?

While Chippo comes with its set of balls, you can also play the game with real golf balls.

What are Chippo boards made of?

Chippo™ uses high-quality ABS plastic, nylon, and artificial turf on all their boards.
